New Look. Same Great Blog.

As you have probably already noticed, I switched up the design of my blog a little. Okay, more like a lot! Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new look. I feel that it's more elegant, friendlier and overall more professional looking. I'm still working on a sections though so please bear with me. As always, feel free to leave me comments about what you'd like me to add, change or talk about.

HTC Hero (Sprint) Error: Sync is Currently Experiencing Problems

The Problem:
Over the past two or three weeks, my Hero had constantly been syncing my contacts. This hadn't always been the case but the sync icon showed up continuously every few minutes, despite the fact that I had not added any recent contacts. The issue caused significant draining of my battery, which you can imagine was very frustrating. I manually stopped the sync, but when I would enable it again I would get an error message that said "sync is currently experiencing problems," along with a red exclamation point. I messed around a little and finally found a solution to my troublesome Hero that had been acting more like a Villain as of late.

The Solution:
On your Hero, press the menu button and use the following route:

1. settings > applications > manage applications > contacts storage.
2. select "clear data"
3. settings > accounts & sync >
   
4. select "Google"
5. sync your contacts

Since I've done this I haven't had the error message that said "sync is currently experiencing problems." However, before doing this, I strongly recommend going to your Gmail contacts on your computer and manually backing them up just in case. This is just good practice in general. After all, what would you do if all of your contacts suddenly just disappeared?

The only issue that clearing my contacts storage caused was my contacts no longer had their associated Facebook pictures next them. I have done some research but no one really has an answer. I'll do some experimenting on my Hero and will let you know if I encounter a fix of my own.

How Do I Move My Old Files & Settings to My New Computer with Windows 7?

I’ve always wondered how this worked, but never actually had to worry about it until I procured my new Dell Studio Laptop, as mentioned in my previous post.  On my old laptop I had always kept a running backup of everything so that I could transfer it over to a new system whenever I got one—boy was I wrong!  Microsoft has made it incredibly easy with their built in tool called “Windows Easy Transfer.” I followed these simple steps:

On Your Old Computer

1. Go the start menu and type “windows easy transfer”
2. Chose transfer cable, external hard drive/removable media or network as your transfer method
3. Select your files and pick a save location
4. Wait until the transfer is complete and you’re done!

*only works for Windows 2000, XP, Vista & 7

On Your New Computer

1. Double-click the transfer file located in the place you specified
2. Chose what to transfer
3. Wait and you’re done!

This process was a lot simpler than I thought it’d be.  It doesn’t erase anything from your old computer and the process is fairly fast.  I used an external hard drive to do my transfer and it took about an hour to transfer 30GB over USB (my old and new laptop both have Windows 7 on them).  All of your settings from your previous computer are saved, including the location of your documents and anything else you have saved on your user account.  The only thing it doesn’t do is transfer your programs over.  However, a windows transfer report is generated, showing you what programs are already on the new computer and what programs still need to be installed.

My New Dell Studio Laptop!

I didn’t necessarily need a new laptop because the one I have is just fine, but like all tech heads when you see a good deal…well you can’t pass it up right?  A co-worker of mine is hoping aboard the black and white ship known as Apple and therefore decided to sell his Dell Studio Laptop 1537.  I’ve only been on it for two days but I can already tell you that this thing is a CHAMP!  The screen is almost twice as bright as my last laptop.  In fact, it’s so bright that I only have the brightness turned up halfway.  Otherwise it looks like I’m constantly stepping into the light!  Oh and speaking of light, the keyboard on this bad boy lights up.  Yeah that’s right, it lights up!  How often do you see that on a laptop ‘ey? 

Big ups to CLive for providing me with this laptop.  He’s quite the artist too!  I’d put a link but he moved his Blogspot without telling people…smh…
